Basalt Stones for 7000 Oaks: The Landsburg Quarry

The Landsburg quarry of the Nordhessische Basalt union.

The Landsburg forest below the quarry. Oaks and beech trees grow here.

On the top of the volcano begins the giant hole of the quarry.

Panorama view shows the situation, the bottom of the hole is filled up with water.

The hot melted rocks coming out of the volcano cooled down 60 million years ago while dinosaurs lived here in the period of tertiär.

A detail view of the basalt stones. Most of them are broken into short pieces like boulders, used to build new highways.

Mr. Weiß, the foreman of the quarry, carried the basalt stones for Joseph Beuys 7000 Oaks with his caterpillar during 1982-1987. For this extension of the project in 1996 he did also his best to pick out the biggest 15 stones which are very rare.

These are the 15 selected stones for Dia Center for the Arts.
