| Biography |
 |
Donald Judd was born in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, on June 3, 1928. At Columbia University, New York, he studied philosophy from 1949–1953 and art history from 1957–1962. At the same time, he began to produce his earliest paintings before quickly branching into three-dimensional forms. Judd's first important solo exhibition was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 1968. Thereafter he exhibited widely throughout the world. Beginning in the late 1950s, he served as a critic for art magazines, in later years he wrote extensively on a range of related topics. In 1986 a permanent installation of his work opened at Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas.
